8.1 Room 7 and Jefferson Hall

Room 7, West Lawn and Jefferson Hall (Hotel C West Range) are the two spaces where the majority of the Society’s activities take place. The Jefferson Society was first founded in Room 7– one of the student residences situated on the Lawn as part of Thomas Jefferson’s original Academical Village design– on July 14, 1825. The room serves a key function within the Society as a a hub for socializing and continued intellectual discourse outside of the Society’s weekly meetings. Jefferson Hall (or “The Hall”, as it is often called by Society members) houses the Society’s weekly meetings, which begin at approximately 7:29 pm on Friday evenings during the academic year. This box also contains documents pertaining to the Society’s possessions, such as the Sully portrait of Thomas Jefferson (which currently hangs in the Rotunda).
