“History of the Session” (1937 – 1938)

This humorous account, composed by Werner L. Janney and entitled, “One Thousand and One Friday Nights”, provides a recordĀ of the Society’s activities from 1937 to 1938. Mr. Janney is here described as “a grad. student in English, [who] was a member of the Society for more years than enough (1932-38)” who was considered “the ‘Patriarch of Jeff’… [and] a warehouse of tradition and precedent”. The footnotes in this record provide a look at the general goings-on at the University during this time, as well as contextualize the Society’s activities within the broader time period. These notations also offer great insight into the internal politics and complex faction-building which took place within the Society.
